Player ratings as Newcastle United edge to victory at St James' Park

Newcastle United

Tim Krul Made a great save from Coutinho’s header, which was actually (incorrectly) ruled offside, but neither of them knew at the time. Elsewhere, he marshalled the defence well. 7/10

Daryl Janmaat Was a physical presence, as shown by a bruising challenge on Balotelli, for which he could have been sent off. 6

Steven Taylor Yellow-carded for some bizarre antics standing in front of Mignolet at free-kicks, but an assured presence otherwise. 6

Fabricio Coloccini Yet again a rock at the back for the Toon, dealing well with Balotelli, though admittedly, he was still a bit off form. 7

Paul Dummett Reliable down the left, and contributed to the goal with a good overlapping run. 7

Mehdi Abeid (Man of the Match) The young Algerian really impressed on his debut, having been loaned out for the previous two seasons. Strong in the tackle and composed in possession. 8

Jack Colback Formed a strong partnership at the base of the midfield with Abeid, allowing the more attacking players to play. 7

Gabriel Obertan Looked bright before being stretchered off just after 20 minutes. 6

Moussa Sissoko Made strong, direct runs through the middle and played a part in the goal. 7

Sammy Ameobi Showed good feet and trickery to find space on the wing and provide some decent deliveries into the box. 7

Papiss Cisse Did not have a lot of service in the first half, but neither did he take the game by the scruff of the neck like the best strikers to create chances. Subbed for Perez at half time. 5

Rolando Aarons Was lively and a significant threat after coming on. Even at 18, he already has the confidence to run at players, which will please Newcastle fans. 6

Ayoze Perez Was quick to react to capitalise on Moreno’s mistake to score the goal, making it two in two for the player who was playing in the Spanish second division last season. 7

Remy Cabella Went close after a good Newcastle break, but saw a decent shot saved well. 6

Simon Mignolet Wasn’t tested a lot. Made a mess of coming out for a corner, which nearly led to a Newcastle goal, but made amends with a fine save from Cabella late on, with an outstretched leg after going the other way. 6

Glen Johnson Good header off the line and not particularly at fault defensively, like he sometimes is, but also could not provide much of his typical attacking threat. 6

Martin Skrtel Solid at the back. Probably should have put a good chance from a header in the first half on target, but it was a good run from him which created the chance. 7

Dejan Lovren Composed in central defence and, like Skrtel, was not really at fault for Newcastle’s goal. 7

Alberto Moreno Bad mistake for the Newcastle goal, failing to clear the ball from six yards out and also somewhat at fault for another Magpies break. 4

Jordan Henderson Did nothing wrong per se, but the game needed to be taken by the scruff of the neck by someone, with a bit of magic or urgency. Henderson is not really the player to provide that, and it proved so here. 5

Steven Gerrard Looked the most likely of Liverpool’s midfielders to create something, and the player showing the most passion. 7

Joe Allen Distributed the ball well enough, but, as often, did not provide any real direct, running attacking threat. 5

Raheem Sterling Surprisingly quiet, given his impressive recent form. The game being compact, scrappy and slow did not suit the youngster’s fast attacking game. 5

Philippe Coutinho Like Sterling, did not live up to his usual standards. Should have looked more to stretch the defence by getting in behind. 5

Mario Balotelli Not the most abject of his performances, as he showed hunger in most of the game and the service to him was quite poor. But he’s still looking like a shadow of the player he can be. 5

Fabio Borini Couldn’t break the deadlock after coming on after 66 minutes. 6
