Paul Merson has branded Arsene Wenger as “childish” and says that the Frenchman’s criticism of the former midfielder is “weird”.

The Gunners boss hit out at the former Arsenal man following his recent criticism of the team after the 3-3 Champions League capitulation against Anderlecht last week.

But Merson, 46, who played under Wenger during his early years in charge at Arsenal, was surprised to hear him hit out at him.

“I think it’s childish he’s had a dig at me. Not interested in Paul Merson? He was begging me to stay when he offered me a new contract,” Merson told the Daily Star.

“I was surprised when I saw what he’d said about me. It shocked me. It’s weird.”

Arsenal squandered another lead on Sunday as they were beaten 2-1 by Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium.
