Philip Neville singled out Luke Shaw for special praise after Manchester United edged to a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils were made to work hard for the three points as the United left-back came close to breaking the deadlock in the first half.

Louis van Gaal introduced Juan Mata as a second-half substitute and the Spain international netted a 67th-minute winner for the hosts.

Despite Mata’s superb-sub impact, former United full-back Neville appeared to be most impressed with 19-year-old left-back Shaw.

Van Gaal, meanwhile, warned Mata that he isn’t assured a first-team place despite his match-winning heroics on Saturday afternoon.

“Juan Mata has played a lot of matches,” said Van Gaal.

“I have given him the chance, I give other players the chance and at the end we shall see who plays more than the other. It is always like that in football.

“He didn’t change the formation or the style of play but he scored, and that’s always the most important thing.

“When you score, you win the game. Because of that we won. So I am happy with that.”
