Andre Schurrle has plenty of time to reflect on Chelsea’s brilliant start to the Premier League season after he was ruled out of Germany’s games against Gibraltar and Spain due to an infection.

The Chelsea midfielder was part of Joachim Low’s triumphant German squad that won the World Cup in Brazil this summer after a tense 1-0 victory over Argentina in extra-time.

Schurrle has made a subdued start to the Premier League season, starting four games and making a further four substitute appearances for Jose Mourinho’s side.

And the Chelsea midfielder is thrilled to see the west London side four points clear at the top of the table after a 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday.

Schurrle wrote on Instagram: “To the top:)) #behappy #blues”

Earlier this week, the German federation released a statement to explain why Blues forward Schurrle won’t feature this weekend.

“Schürrle suffered a persistent infection in October and could not train regularly,” the German federation said in a statement.

“It was agreed with Joachim Löw that he stays in London and trains individually to optimise his fitness.”
