The Arsenal playmaker received an award for helping to fund surgery for a host of seriously ill children
Mesut Ozil has been recognised at the Laureus Sports Awards after helping to fund surgery for some seriously ill Brazilian children after the World Cup.
The Germany playmaker used some of his World Cup bonus to fund operations on 23 children after the tournament in South America.
“We had the idea to help 23 children, because we had 23 players in the [Germany World Cup] squad,” said World Cup winner Ozil.
“And they underwent surgery, which was successful. I am very thankful. The doctors did a great job. I am very happy because it goes well for the children.
“This award will get a very special place at my home.”
Arsenal star Ozil continued: “Thank you for this Laureus award,
“I promise that this will be the beginning of further projects for disadvantaged children.”
