Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi appeared to be on friendly terms as the pair shook hands ahead of Portugal’s clash with Argentina at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

The pair are reported to share a frosty relationship but looking in relatively good spirits ahead of the international friendly game.

Despite Messi and Ronaldo being the headline grabbers, the Ballon d’Or winners failed to make their presences felt during the match, as 20-year-old Raphael Guerreiro netted in stoppage time to hand Portugal a 1-0 win.

Messi and Ronaldo’s rivalry hit the headlines once again last week after reports claimed that the Portugal star used an offensive nickname for the Barcelona man.

However, Ronaldo took to Facebook to quash the claims, writing: “News is circulating that I allegedly made offending remarks regarding Lionel Messi.

“This is absolutely false and I have assured my lawyer takes action to sue those responsible.

“I have the utmost respect for all my professional colleagues, and Messi is obviously no exception.”
