Wayne Rooney continued his goal-scoring form as Manchester United were 2-1 winners against Arsenal at The Emirates.

The Gunners were punished for wasting a host of chances in the first half as Arsenal left-back Kieran Gibbs put the ball into his own net in the 56th minute.

United captain Rooney, who scored three goals during the international break, finished a sweeping counter-attacking move to double the visitors lead with five minutes remaining.

Arsenal substitute Olivier Giroud, who was making his first appearance since suffering a broken leg in late August, scored what ultimately proved to be an injury-time consolation.

And 29-year-old Rooney was thrilled with United’s measured performance in north London.

“We rode our luck at times, our goalkeeper was fantastic,” said Rooney.

“We felt they were vulnerable on the break and we hit them with two good goals, which was our game plan.”
