Real Madrid 1 Liverpool 0: Player ratings as Kolo Toure impresses

Real Madrid 1 Liverpool 0: Player ratings as Marcelo impresses in another victory over the Reds

Real Madrid

Iker Casillas Didn’t really have much to do but did look nervy when dealing with a corner. Probably not the same commanding presence he was a few years ago. 5/10

Alvaro Arbeloa Very disciplined defensively and often tucked in to help Madrid keep their defensive shape. Also allowed Marcelo to get forward as he knew he was covered at the back. 7

Raphael Varane Another assured performance from the Frenchman. Very mature considering his age and what he did have to do defensively, he did it effortlessly using his power and pace. 7

Sergio Ramos His aggressive nature sometimes gets the better of him but he was unlucky to be booked after cleanly winning the ball from Borini. Marshalled the defence well though. 7

Marcelo One of the best attacking full-backs in the world and this performance highlighted that. Was excellent going forward and his cross to set Benzema up for the first goal was sumptuous. Unlucky not to get a second assist when Bale hit his cut back against the bar. A constant menace down the wing. 8

Toni Kroos Orchestrated everything from a deep position. Showed his full range of passing today as he played a number of diagonals, changing the point of the attack. Hardly lost the ball and had an astonishing pass completion rate of 97 per cent. 7

Luka Modric Also excellent as he created a number of chances. One of his passes was outstanding as he played the ball in behind a static defence. Ronaldo wasted the chance but Modric continued to probe and never passes the ball negatively. 7

Isco Not the best game from the Spaniard. Lost the ball a few times as a some of his dribbles didn’t quite go to plan. Slowed the game down but his pass to Marcelo did lead to the first goal. 5

James Rodriguez Quiet night by his standards but still interchanged effectively with the attacking players. Has a good awareness of space and nearly caught Liverpool out when he hit a nice curling shot early on in the game which Mignolet did well to save. 6

Cristiano Ronaldo Very poor from a player that has set new standards in recent times. Wasted a number of chances that with his quality should have been dispatched. Tested the ‘keeper with a few free-kicks but lacked potency today. 5

Karim Benzema Excellent game that was capped by the winning goal. Madrid fans weren’t too sure about him a few years back but he has slowly won them over with his energy and improvement in front of goal. 7

Substitutes

Gareth Bale His pace hasn’t diminished despite being injured for a few weeks and he drew a foul from Moreno as he got in behind him. Tested the keeper with a late free-kick. 6

Liverpool

Simon Mignolet Had a very good game as Madrid dominated most of the game and peppered his shot with goals. Did well to save from Rodriguez early on and made a few decent saves from Ronaldo. 7

Javi Manquillo A fairly decent game but he was restricted in an attacking sense due to Madrid’s dominance. When he did have his chance he didn’t cross the ball early enough. 6

Kolo Toure Grew in stature as the game went on after a nervy start. Exposed by his lack of pace but was brave and willing to put his body on the line to make vital interceptions. 7

Martin Skrtel Not as composed as Toure and made a few rash challenges. Was caught in possession early on which could have led to a goal. Will be thankful that Mignolet saved from the resulting chance. 5

Alberto Moreno A livewire that has blistering pace. Gives everything to the cause and attacking wise he is very accomplished. Needs to work on his defensive game though and was booked for a mis-timed challenge. 7

Lucas Leiva Shielded the defence quite well and broke up the flow of the game when he could. At times he was helpless as Madrid overloaded the midfield. 7

Emre Can The match seemed too much for the youngster and he was nervy at the beginning. Gave away the ball when in promising positions and his over-hit cross when he had four players to aim for summed up his game. 5

Joe Allen Impressive game from the Welshman considering the illustrious talents he was up against. Was neat and tidy in possession and also did his defensive work quite well as he tucked in to give Lucas help. 7

Adam Lallana A few neat turns in the game and has excellent close control. A performance that offered much but didn’t give enough. Dragged a shot wide when in a good position. 6

Lazar Markovic Helped ease the pressure on the defence as he went on a few runs. Still is yet to replicate the form he showed at Benfica but he tried to attack often without any support. 5

Fabio Borini
A difficult role as he played up front by himself. Ran himself into the ground and tried to offer his midfielders an outlet when he could by drifting out wide. 6

Substitutes

Philippe Coutinho Added some quality with some neat touches but was confined to a defensive role due to Liverpool’s mindset. 6

Steven Gerrard More composure in midfield when he came on and tried to keep the ball and spring attacks when he could. 6

Raheem Sterling Had little effect on the outcome of the game but that was mainly because he was starved of any real service. 5
