Saints duo Luther Burrell and Stephen Myler left out of England squad

Stuart Lancaster names 34-man squad to train ahead of South Africa clash at Twickenham on Saturday

Northampton Saints backs Luther Burrell and Stephen Myler have been left out of England’s 34-man squad to take on South Africa next week.

After Saturday’s 24-21 defeat by New Zealand, England head coach Stuart Lancaster has named a 34-man squad to train at Pennyhill Park ahead of the Springboks match.

“The players have had recovery today and we will review the match as a group tomorrow morning before moving on to preparing for South Africa,” Lancaster said.

Saracens’ Owen Farrell and Bath Rugby’s George Ford will again battle it out for the 10 jersey with Myler nursing a hamstring injury, while Burrell has a hand injury.

Their club team-mate Courtney Lawes has been named in the squad despite going off in the first half with concussion, and he will undergo the return-to-play protocols with the England medical team at their Surrey base, but is doubtful to make Lancaster’s match-day squad which is expected to be announced on Thursday.

The Springboks began their Castle Lager Outgoing Tour with a surprise 29-15 defeat to Ireland in Dublin on Saturday, but have never lost to England since Lancaster took charge of the Red Rose in 2012, with three wins and a draw.

Their last meeting at Twickenham saw the Boks leave with a 16-15 win as Willem Alberts’ second-half try made the difference.

South Africa head coach Heyneke Meyer is due to name his team on Wednesday.
