Jose Mourinho could not hide his delight after watching his Chelsea side thrash Schalke 5-0 to book their place in the last 16 of the Champions League with a game to spare.

Goals from John Terry, Willian and Jan Kirchhoff’s own-goal made it 3-0 at half-time in Germany, before Didier Drogba and Ramires scored after the break to add gloss to the scoreline.

Mourinho, whose side are still unbeaten this season, was thrilled with his side’s performance as they confirmed their place in the knockout stage as Group G winners.

“The team played a fantastic match,” said Mourinho. “At this moment this team is very mature and very confident.

“To win 5-0 away in the Champions League is not normal. To win 5-0 in Germany is even more not normal. The performance was complete. It was very impressive.

“We have a good team. Obviously we can lose and the bad result is waiting for us. But the reality is the team is playing very well.”

He added: “We did it and we did it with one game in advance. It is important for us in December, a difficult month, to have one game against Sporting Lisbon where we don’t need to win or need the points.”
