Sunderland 0 Chelsea 0: Player ratings as Diego Costa struggles

Player ratings as the Premier League leaders are held to a goalless draw at the Stadium of Light

Chelsea

Thibaut Courtois A comfortable night for the Belgium goalkeeper. Made a fantastic save from Altidore late in the game with his legs. 7/10

Branislav Ivanovic Solid performance as usual. Could have scored a goal after a neat one-two with Willian but his fierce effort was saved well. 7

Gary Cahill Committed performance. Made one fantastic block from Wickham as he attempted to get a shot away. 7

John Terry Made no real mistakes and led the team well from the back. Was a dominating performance and Sunderland struggled to break them down. 7

Cesar Azpilicueta Kept Adam Johnson quiet throughout the whole game. Reliable defensively but didn’t make an impact offensively. 6

Nemanja Matic Neat and tidy in possession and bossed the midfield with his presence and authority. Had a few shots from distance but none of them really troubled the ‘keeper. 7

Cesc Fabregas Tried to create opportunities but the front line of Chelsea struggled today which affected his game. Heavy influence on the game as he made over 100 passes. 6

Willian Probably the brightest of the three attackers that played in behind the striker. Tried to make things happen and hit the post with a fierce drive from outside the box. 6

Oscar Disappointing. Dropped deep to try and influence the game but his passing was too safe. It was normally lateral rather than forward and allowed Sunderland to get players in behind the ball. 5

Eden Hazard Has been one of the best players this season but it was a quiet performance by his standards. Like his team-mates, he cut inside too often and passed sideways rather than looking for the pass that could have created a clear cut chance. 6

Diego Costa Lucky not to be sent off after his arm caught Wes Brown in the face. Had no real impact on the game and was substituted for Drogba late on. 5

Sunderland

Costel Pantilimon Made a few great saves. One was fantastic from Willian as he got the faintest of fingertips on it to divert the ball onto the post. 8

Santiago Vergini Excellent performance defensively and it was nearly capped with an unlikely goal. His shot on the turn clipped the top of the cross bar as he found himself in the penalty area. 7

John O’Shea A commanding display from the former Manchester United player. He rolled back the years and made one excellent slide tackle to deny Costa a chance. 8

Wes Brown Like his defensive partner, he was committed and strong as Chelsea struggled to break the down. 7

Anthony Reveillere Made so many vital blocks throwing himself into challenges. A committed display which earned his team a clean sheet. 7

Sebastian Larsson Was subdued in attack, but played well defensively covering the pitch well. Also shifted across to deny Chelsea’s players the space. 6

Lee Cattermole Absolutely outstanding. Made seven successful tackles and his deflected cross nearly led to goal. Shielded the defence with some clever positioning. 8

Jack Rodwell Was brilliant in the first half and his performance was indicative of a committed Sunderland display. Got tired as the match progressed and was substituted. 6

Adam Johnson Could have scored late on with a curling shot that just went past the post. Tried to make things happen but Azpilicueta restricted him to just a few chances. 6

Conor Wickham Had a great chance early in the game. Took the ball down brilliantly but was denied by an excellent last-ditch challenge. Looked one of Sunderland’s best attacking outlets. 6

Steven Fletcher Was a difficult role as he was often isolated and expected to hold the ball up with no support. Did reasonably well considering the circumstances. 6

Substitutes

Jordi Gomez Added some composure in midfield as he passed the ball around quite well. Sunderland nearly got a late winner and that was down to his more attacking instincts. 6

Jozy Altidore More threatening than Fletcher and nearly scored the winning goal. His shot was saved well by Courtois as he aimed for the bottom corner. 6
