That's the worst back four you'll ever see! Jamie Redknapp says of Manchester United defence
Jamie Redknapp described the Manchester United defence that finished their 1-0 derby loss as the worst-ever Red Devils back-four.
Louis van Gaal was forced to reshuffle his defensive unit after Chris Smalling’s first-half red card before summer signing Marcos Rojo suffered a dislocated shoulder after half-time.
The United manager brought on experienced midfielder Michael Carrick to sure up his defence before introducing inexperienced youth graduate Paddy McNair.
And former Liverpool star Redknapp couldn’t quite believe the names in United’s defence at the end of their narrow loss to Manchester City at The Etihad.
“Look at the back four they ended up with,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.
“Valencia, McNair,Carrick and Shaw. That’s the back four for Manchester United. That’s the worst back four you’ll ever see!”
Argentina international Sergio Aguero scored his 10th Premier League goal of the season to seal a 1-0 victory for the defending champions.
But former Liverpool captain Graeme Souness warned City that they must do more if they want to catch leaders Chelsea.
“This will give them a bit of confidence they badly need – but I’m disappointed I have to say that,” said Souness.
“There are such a big team with such good players but getting beat is part of football and you lose the odd game even if you are the best around.
[The best teams] want to be back the next day if they lose but City got a bad result in Russia, a bad result against West Ham and a bad result against Newcastle.
“Big players don’t react like that and that’s my concern for City, who should be better than that and better than they were in the last 10-15 minutes against United.”
