Benjamin Stambouli revealed that his salute celebration was dedicated to the “world’s military” after he fired Tottenham into the Europa League knockout stage with a 1-0 victory over Partizan Belgrade.

The match at White Hart Lane was suspended by the referee just before the break for 10 minutes following three first-half pitch intruders.

Stambouli netted a second-half winner in the 49th minute when he followed up Roberto Soldado’s shot that hit the post.

“My celebration (a salute) was for all military round the world. They fight for peace,” said Stambouli, before revealing his delight at the victory.

“It was very good to score and win,” he added.

“It is only positive things for us. We play good teams who love to fight and we need to improve.”
