Louis van Gaal has ruled Angel di Maria out of Manchester United’s clash with Stoke City after the Argentina international picked up a hamstring injury on Saturday.

The summer signing was substituted early in the first half of the 3-0 victory over Hull City at Old Trafford and the United boss expects the 26-year-old to be sidelined next week.

“I think Di Maria was hamstring,” said Van Gaal. “He knows his own body very well because at once he said he had to come off, so maybe it is not too bad.

“It is always difficult to say. We will have to wait and see. He shall be out for the match against Stoke for sure.”

Van Gaal, however, is hoping that captain Wayne Rooney’s injury is not too serious after he limped off late in the game.

“He had a kick on his calf I believe,” he said of Rooney.

“He then had a kick on his knee but it was not too serious because he said he will play.”
