Wayne Rooney is backing Cristiano Ronaldo to win the Ballon d’Or for the second year running in January.

The Real Madrid and Portugal star netted the prestigious award for the second time at the turn of the year after Lionel Messi had won the previous four honours.

Ronaldo has scored an incredible 23 goals in 17 games so far this season, and the 29-year-old’s former team-mate is expecting him to take home the trophy in Zurich in January.

When asked by MUTV if he felt Ronaldo would retain the Ballon d’Or, Rooney replied: “I think so.

“He’s had an incredible two or three years and I think he has certainly overtaken Lionel Messi now as the best player in the world.

“I’m sure it’ll be difficult to give it to anyone else.”

Will Cristiano Ronaldo win this year’s Ballon d’Or?
