Wenger: Man United boss’ comments galvanised Welbeck at Arsenal
The Arsenal manager believes that the England striker has benefited from having a point to prove to Louis van Gaal
Danny Welbeck has been galvanised by Louis van Gaal’s comments about him following his transfer to Arsenal from Manchester United in the summer, according to Arsene Wenger.
Van Gaal said that Welbeck wasn’t of the required standard for United after opting to let the England international move to Emirates Stadium in a £16m deal.
I always respected Danny Welbeck, I always felt that he a great future
Welbeck, 23, has enjoyed a positive start to life in north London, scoring five goals and making two assists for Wenger’s men this season.
And when asked if Van Gaal’s comments helped to inspire Welbeck, Wenger said: “Certainly yes – you can take every challenge in a positive way and that’s what he did.
“I believe as well that you have to understand that Louis van Gaal had not Welbeck under his orders for a long time and it’s always very difficult to know the players well when you see them for three or four weeks.
“But as well Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie have an exceptional goal-scoring record. In front of him he had two top quality players. What he needed was a chance.”
Wenger continued: “I always respected Danny Welbeck, I always felt that he a great future.
“But what he has achieved in the last three months certainly he has gained more respect. For the English national team as well and he has shown that again in Scotland.”
