West Brom 0 Arsenal 1: Player ratings as Santi Cazorla stars

Player ratings as Danny Welbeck heads Arsenal to victory at The Hawthorns

By Sam Rogers

West Brom

Ben Foster Was lucky not to be punished for a mistake when caught in possession of the ball by Alexis, having made a fine save to deny Danny Welbeck just minutes before. Possibly could have done better with the goal. 5/10

Craig Dawson Didn’t have his best game and left his defensive team-mates exposed at times. Did some of the basics well but not an overwhelming performance from Dawson. 4

Andre Wisdom Did well to keep Welbeck at bay early on but was beaten for pace by Cazorla for the cross which lead to the goal. 5

Joleon Lescott Showed his experience with superb anticipation and positioning. Made some important clearances, too. 7

Sebastien Pocognoli Made a couple of important blocks to prevent Arsenal taking the lead earlier than they did. Picked up an injury in the last 20 minutes and was replaced by Cristian Gamboa. 5

Yusuf Mulumbu Failed to make a real impact in the game and like many of his team-mates, never really got going. Was replaced in response to the goal as West Brom tried to get back into the game. 5

Craig Gardner Was absent until the last 15 minute when the home side pushed for an equaliser. Went close a couple of times late on. 6

Graham Dorrans Quiet afternoon for the Scot, picked up a yellow card for his troubles but played a few important passes. 5

Stephane Sessegnon Was left isolated in the counter attack and lacked the pace to really test the Arsenal defence. Was replaced much to the displeasure of the home fans. 6

Chris Brunt A poor showing from Brunt, lacked sharpness at times. One to forget. 3

Saido Berahino Could have opened the scoring his side but for an extremely dubious offside decision just after half time, and found the side netting minutes later. Hit the crossbar in the closing stages fo the game as his side pushed for an equaliser. 7

Cristian Gamboa Came on for Pocognoli in the last 20 minutes was impressive for his cameo. Effective defensively and provided a great ball that saw Berahino hit the woodwork. 7

Georgios Samaras Had little impact when he replaces Sessegnon. 4

Victor Anichebe Came on for Mulumbu and tried to push for an equaliser but was ineffective in his brief stint. 5

Emiliano Martinez Was untested for almost 80 minutes but made a few key saves as the baggies pushed for an equaliser. 7

Per Mertesacker Didn’t have much to do at the back, was efficient in starting attacks off before blocking a fiery shot from Gardner with 10 minutes to go. 5

Calum Chambers Put in a solid show on the right causing problems at times on the front foot. 6

Nacho Monreal – Went off injured in the first half, was unable to make a real impact on the game befor being replaced by Kieran Gibbs. 4

Laurent Koschelny Should have been punished for playing Berahino onside, but was largely unpunished in the remainder of the match. 4

Mathieu Flamini Was solid if unspectacular in the midfield, getting the job done but being perhaps more defensively minded than normal. 6

Santi Cazorla Was involved in plenty for Arsenal and put in a cross of the highest order to find Welbeck unmarked in the box. Was sharp throughout. 7

Aaron Ramsey Wasted a guilt-edged chance to put his side ahead when he found himself in the box with just Foster to beat but drags his effort off target. Faded as the game went on. 5

Alexis Sanchez Arsenal’s shining light, looking the most lively and involved in the play. Was frustrated as the match wore on, tried his best to be a difference. 6

Danny Welbeck Tested Foster but couldn’t break the deadlock in the first half. Finally got his goal on the hour mark as the former United man linked up with Santi Cazorla who put the ball on a plate for Welbeck. 8

Olivier Giroud Not at his best but showed plenty of promise and will be happy to get nearly 80 minutes under his belt. 6

Kieran Gibbs Came on for Monreal in the first half hour after the Spaniard picked up a knock. Looked dangerous down the flank, but was troubled in defence. 6

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
– Replaced Giroud but got injured himself. Managed to finish the game but will be a concern for Wenger. 5
