Wayne Rooney scored twice as England beat Scotland 3-1 in Tuesday’s friendly clash at Celtic Park.

Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain gave England the lead in the 32nd minute with a glancing header from Jack Wilshere’s pass.

England captain Rooney then doubled the lead shortly after half time with an instinctive close-range header.

Andrew Robertson pulled a goal back for Scotland but Rooney scored again from an Adam Lallana pass to seal the victory.

Tuesday’s big game inevitably prompted plenty of activity on Twitter – and here are some of our favourite updates.

Ex-Liverpool man Neil Mellor (@NeilMellor33) is impressed by Rooney’s first strike: “Great placement from Rooney with that header to make it a great start to second half!”

Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) watches Rooney edge toward’s England’s all-time goal-scorer record: “Yes! Get in there, just 4 to go @WayneRooney . It’s crap being second anyway. Feel Rooney’s breath on the back of my neck.”

Celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) is happy to see Wilshere perform well once again: “Another top class performance by @JackWilshere – silencing more of his snipers with every game now.”

Arsenal legend Ian Wright (@IanWright0) agrees: “Excellent again tonight @JackWilshere”

Joey Barton (@Joey7Barton) gives his post-match verdict: “Smalling and Shaw solid, although hardly tested. Wilshere good again. Rooney good leaders performance. Clyne very impressive. MOMS for me.”

Mark Bright (@Mark__Bright) is a happy man: “We came, we saw, we conquered, well done #England #Neverindoubt #GodSaveQueen”
