Phil Thompson believes Adam Lallana should be an automatic starter for Liverpool.

The England international levelled after Simon Mignolet’s own goal had inadvertently handed Leicester City the lead on Tuesday night.

I can’t understand why he doesn’t play more often. He brings something to the party

Liverpool midfielders Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson sealed a 3-1 victory against the Foxes, lifting the Reds up to ninth in the table.

And Reds legend Phil Thompson feels Lallana can offer Brendan Rodgers’s side something different from the other members of the Liverpool squad.

“This guy seems to play exceptionally well, sometimes man-of-the-match, then he doesn’t play the next [match],” Thompson told Sky Sports News.

“You see his goal, technically it was brilliant. He is one of the few players in the Liverpool side who can get in between the lines and turn quickly.

“Maybe Coutinho and Lallana are too alike. Maybe that’s problem searching for the No10 role, which I believe is his best spot.

“I can’t understand why he doesn’t play more often. He brings something to the party. He is progressive with his passing and his movement.

“He should be one of the main starters every match.”

Lallana has scored two goals in eight Premier League appearances following his £25m move to Anfield from Southampton in the summer transfer window.
