Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Arsenal will look to sign a central defender in the January transfer window.

The Gunners were once again without Laurent Koscielny against Newcastle on Saturday night as the French defender continues to struggle with an Achilles problem.

And after Mathieu Debuchy was forced to play at centre-half for Wenger’s men during the 4-1 win over the Magpies, the Arsenal boss underlined his desire to strengthen his rearguard next month.

Asked if he will look to sign a centre-half, Wenger told Sky Sports: “Well yes, because with Laurent Koscielny’s injury we’re a bit cautious and we need cover.

“We’re a bit depleted at the back and we responded very well.”

Saturday’s victory left Arsenal in sixth place in the Premier League table.
