Arsenal transfers: ‘Arsene Wenger needs to sign Monaco star’
Perry Groves urges Arsene Wenger to sign the next Patrick Vieria
Perry Groves has urged Arsene Wenger to sign Geoffrey Kondogbia, likening the Monaco midfielder to Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira.
The Gunners have been linked with a host of defensive midfielders in recent months, including Real Madrid’s World Cup winner Sami Khedira and Southampton star Morgan Schneiderlin.
He is nearest I’ve seen to Patrick Vieira
However, Groves reckons Kondogbia could be the answer to Wenger’s defensive-midfield conundrum after the France international impressed the former Arsenal winger at The Emirates Cup in August.
“I’d probably go for a player at Monaco called Geoffrey Kondogbia,” Groves told The Sport Review.
“He is a French international about 21. He played against us during a pre-season tournament at The Emirates and he is nearest I’ve seen to Patrick Vieira.
“He is the kind of player we [Arsenal] need.”
The 21-year-old French midfielder has scored one goal and made one assist in 11 Ligue 1 appearances so far this season.
Groves, meanwhile, believes his former team-mate Steve Bould has helped improve Arsenal’s defence since his appointment as Wenger’s assistant manager in 2012.
“You can tell that they’ve been working on the back four,” he said. “They’ve been working on the distances where they play with each other.
“We’ve been unlucky with injuries because we’ve had to play Monreal and Debuchy at centre-half, but when Koscielny is fit, him and Mertesacker work quite well together.
“I’d like to see them work on the full-backs so they don’t both attack at the same time. But you can tell there has been work going on.”
