Phil Thompson has rubbished Arsene Wenger’s claim that Arsenal will win the Premier League inside three years.

The Gunners boss, whose side are currently seventh in the table, declared that he would win his fourth title by the time his current contract runs out in 2017.

The Frenchman hasn’t led the north London side to Premier League glory since his Invincibles side conquered the English top-flight in empathic style in 2004.

Former Liverpool captain Phil Thompson doesn’t believe Arsenal are anywhere near title glory, adding that Wenger needs to sign a number of top defenders.

“They are still a good team and one of the most attractive teams. But just because you’re one of the most attractive teams, it doesn’t make you the most solid,” Thompson told Sky Sports News.

“This Chelsea team will only get better and the other teams will get better.

“Defensively, he would have to bring in some very good player. Are they out there, particularly centre-halves? That is the area that they will struggle in.
“I don’t think they will do and I’m sure a lot of Arsenal fans feel the same way.”

Arsenal finished in fourth place last season.
