Arsene Wenger admits that Arsenal’s 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Liverpool last season left a “scar in his heart”.

The Gunners were torn apart by Brendan Rodgers’ men at Anfield back in February as the Merseyside outfit challenged for the Premier League title.

Liverpool have endured a stuttering start to the season and find themselves in 11th place heading into Sunday’s showdown.

And Wenger admits that last season’s loss on Merseyside was tough to swallow.

“Liverpool scored over 100 goals last season in the Premier League and they were very good going forward,” said Wenger.

“This season they’ve scored 19 until now so they are not on the same trend offensively.

“They started off the blocks very strong and we were too late to get into the game.

“Every defeat hurts. Every defeat is a scar in your heart forever. We also have very good memories at Liverpool, we won many games at Liverpool.

“Even last year when we lost against them, the week later against the same team we won 2-1 at home in the FA Cup.”
