Xavi has heaped praise on Wayne Rooney, claiming that the Manchester United captain would have had no problem playing for Barcelona.

The United skipper was on the losing side as Barcelona beat United to win the Champions League at Wembley back in 2011.

Spain midfielder Xavi is a keen admirer of the England captain but accepts that he is not likely to quit Old Trafford any time soon.

“Wayne was very complimentary about the way Barcelona play,” Xavi told Shortlist.

“He would have fitted into our style of play no problem, but Manchester United would never have wanted to let one of the best players in the world leave.

“He’s still the player who makes things happen for them.”
