Brendan Rodgers could be sacked unless “rudderless” Liverpool improve, according to Steve Nicol.

The five-time European champions made a premature exit from the Champions League after the Reds failed drew 1-1 with Basel at Anfield on Tuesday night.

Liverpool are in ninth place in the Premier League table ahead of their clash against bitter rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford this weekend.

And former Reds defender Nicol is worried for Rodgers’s future if Liverpool fail to put together a top-four bid in the coming months.

“If things don’t change then ultimately Brendan will pay the price. I don’t think they will have any other option [but to sack Rodgers],” Nicol told talkSPORT.

“We are not even halfway through the season yet and I’m guessing most people don’t expect Liverpool to get into the top four.

“You really wonder where this team is going. He has tried to add to the squad to make it better and somehow it has turned the other way. It is a team that is completely rudderless.”
