Brendan Rodgers likened Raheem Sterling to Alexis Sanchez after he inspired Liverpool to a 3-1 League Cup win over Bournemouth on Wednesday night.

The England international, who was deployed as a striker, scored twice to help the Reds set up a semi-final showdown with Chelsea.

And the Northern Irishman was delighted by the 20-year-old’s display in the cup clash.

“Raheem Sterling was brilliant,” Rodgers told BBC Sport. “I played him as a striker, but you get different types of striker.

“He’s more of an Alexis Sanchez when he plays as a striker – he’s not going to pin the defender.

“He plays in the spaces and he’s got the speed to get in behind. A couple of great finishes and I’m very pleased for him.”
