Jose Mourinho believes Eden Hazard was refreshed thanks to his midweek rest after the Chelsea forward helped fire the league leaders to victory over Hull.

The Belgium international, who didn’t feature against Sporting Lisbon, nodded home his sixth league strike of the season in the seventh minute to break the deadlock for the west London side at Stamford Bridge.

It was not a special performance, it was just a good enough performance. We were never in trouble

Hull midfielder Tom Huddlestone was dismissed in the 60th minute for a foul on Filipe Luis before Diego Costa sealed three points.

“Eden Hazard is a great kid and he had a chance to rest midweek, so today we could see his freshness and it’s always good to have on the pitch a player like him,” Mourinho told BBC Sport.

“John Mikel Obi also had a very positive performance. Once more a big player for us didn’t play – this time Fabregas – and the people who replaced him assumed responsibility.”

On Chelsea’s stuttering performance, Mourinho added: “It was not a special performance, it was just a good enough performance. We were never in trouble.

“The 10 against 11 didn’t change the game. As always Steve’s team was very well organised, made it difficult but we scored early and I think the team felt quite comfortable and we never felt any danger.”

Chelsea remain three points clear of Manchester City, who were 1-0 winners at Leicester City.
