Daniel Sturridge insists Liverpool have reason to be optimistic despite their gutting 3-0 defeat by Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The Reds striker is currently in Los Angeles as the England international continues his rehabilitation from a thigh problem.

But the 25-year-old watched on as Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata put United in charge after Raheem Sterling had missed a couple of clear-cut chances in the first half.

Sturridge’s England and Liverpool team-mate continued his wasteful performance after the break before Robin van Persie wrapped up three points for the hosts.

And the crocked Liverpool striker, who hasn’t featured for Brendan Rodgers’s side since August due to injury, was disappointed with the result.

Sturridge picked up his initial thigh problem during England training in September before suffering a calf strain and then a further thigh problem.

But the former Chelsea and Manchester City forward reassured Liverpool supporters that he is on the comeback trail.
