Phil Neville says David De Gea will deserve every penny of his new Manchester United deal.

The Red Devils are reported to be on the brink of handing the Spain international a £36m five-year contract at Old Trafford.

And former United defender Neville highlighted the 22-year-old’s progress at the 20-time English champions since his move from Atletico Madrid in 2011.

“David De Gea deserves every penny of a new contract at Manchester United,” Neville told BBC Sport.

“If you look from where he has come from, he was as thin as a rake. Physically he wasn’t developed. But you look at him now and he is winning games on his own.

“He is the up-and-coming young goalkeeper.”

Former Arsenal centre-half Martin Keown claimed that De Gea has been United’s only consistent world-class performer over the past two seasons.

“There is a sharpness and maturity about David De Gea,” Keown added.

“He has been one player who has maintained the form you expect of a Manchester United player over the last few years.”
