Rene Meulensteen hails David De Gea's development at Old Trafford
Rene Meulensteen has hailed David De Gea as Manchester United’s most important player.
The United shot stopper made two close-range saves to protect the Red Devils’s lead as Louis van Gaal’s men edged to a 2-1 win against Stoke City on Tuesday.
And former Red Devils assistant manager Meulensteen, who was present at the club when De Gea joined in 2011, praised the ever-maturing Spain international.
“He is the most important player at the moment in Manchester United’s team because he has made so many incredible saves,” Meulensteen told Sky Sports News.
“We always knew that he had that in his game. He has really settled into the Premier League.
“We all knew when he came to the Premier League that he was a really young goalkeeper. He is still a young goalkeeper now.
“It takes time, one, two or three season. What he has done and changed is he has matured. You can see that in how he has performed.”
De Gea, 24, has made 139 appearances for United after the goalkeeper completed a £18m move to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid.
