Cesc Fabregas insisted that Chelsea must aim for improvement after helping the Blues book their place in the League Cup semi-finals with victory at 10-man Derby.

Eden Hazard put Jose Mourinho’s men ahead with a 20-yard shot in the 23rd minute, before Filipe Luis struck his first Chelsea goal 10 minutes after half-time.

Craig Bryson gave Derby hope by halving the deficit in the 71st minute, but Andre Schurrle wrapped up victory after Jake Buxton was sent off.

And man-of-the-match Fabregas said: “These kinds of games are really difficult, they will always give their best and we have to be up for it. I think we deserved to go though.

“I’m enjoying [life at Chelsea]. I think we have a very strong squad.

“You can always get better, we know that and we’re trying to improve in training with what the manager tells us to do. Everyone is really focused and professional. The next two or three weeks are really important in our season.

“We definitely have the talent, the discipline and the courage, I’m sure of that. I can see the team doing well but we will have to work really hard for it.”
