Roberto Martinez says he would welcome Everton drawing Liverpool in the Europa League.

The Reds were relegated to the knockout stage of Europe’s second-tier competition after Brendan Rodgers’s side failed to beat Basel on Tuesday.

Everton have already booked their place in the Europa League last 32 ahead of their clash against Krasnodar in Group H at Goodison Park on Thursday night.

And Toffees manager Martinez, who was linked with the Liverpool position before Brendan Rodgers’s appointment in 2012, is excited by the prospect of a potential Merseyside derby in Europe.

“Meeting Liverpool in the Europa League would be a phenomenal footballing occasion. Whatever happens we will welcome it,” Martinez said.

Everton captain Phil Jagielka scored a late equaliser to rescue a 1-1 draw in the Merseyside derby in the Premier League in October.
