Federer, Marsh and more: Twitter reacts as Liverpool draw with Basel
Roger Federer and Rodney March both tweet their thoughts as Liverpool are knocked out of the Champions League
Liverpool were knocked out of the Champions League after being held to a 1-1 draw by Basel at Anfield on Tuesday night.
Fabian Frei played a one-two with Luca Zuffi before drilling home in the 25th minute on Merseyside.
The Reds were reduced to 10 men on the hour-mark when substitute Lazar Markovic was shown a straight red card when his flailing hand brushed Behrang Safari.
And despite Steven Gerrard’s sublime free-kick, Brendan Rodgers’ men were unable to conjure an equaliser as they are forced to settle for a Europa League spot.
The game prompted plenty of activity on Twitter – and here are some of our favourite updates.
Gary Gardner (@22Gards) is impressed by what he saw in the closing stages: “Can’t fault that effort from Liverpool.”
Rodney Marsh (@RodneyMarsh10) agrees: “Incredible effort by Liverpool – Stunning Stevie G free kick- Down to 10 men worked their sox off – Out”
David Thompson (@77thomo) reserves some praise for the opposition: “Fair play to Basle good effort well played could have had more!”
Tennis star Roger Federer (@rogerfederer) is thrilled to see his home-town club reach the last 16: “Heartrate is coming down slowly after this nailbiter, thanks @FC_Basel for the emotions! Off to bed now, absolutly #exhausted”
Michael Johnson (@jonsarno) keeps it short and simple: “Liverpool were poor despite the red, Simple as that”
Alan Tonge (@Alan_Tonge) makes an all-too-predictable joke at Liverpool’s expense: “I know a girl who supports Liverpool. I might get her some perfume for Xmas. For some reason ‘Chanel Number 5’ is coming to mind :-)”
And finally, Mark Bright (@Mark__Bright) reflects on some of the strikes of the evening: “Gerrard, Sneijder and Ramsey all bagged beauties in the #CL”
