Gary Cahill: Chelsea have quality defensive options
Gary Cahill runs the rule on Chelsea defender's performance
Gary Cahill believes Chelsea have plenty of quality in defence despite growing concerns over their squad depth.
Blues manager Jose Mourinho handed Kurt Zouma a start as he rested captain John Terry for the visit of Sporting Lisbon, whilst Filipe Luis replaced Cesar Azpilicueta at left-back.
And Cahill felt the west London side proved that they are capable of coping without a number of their automatic starters after a 3-1 victory at Stamford Bridge.
“There’s a lot of quality there and we’re all experienced in our own right,” Cahill told Chelsea’s website.
“They have all played in the Champions League, obviously Kurt less so but they have the experience of playing in different leagues in Europe and against opposition from around the continent. It’s great to work with these guys.
“We switched the back four a bit and apart from the goal we conceded I thought it went really well and we worked well together. It was a pleasing night all round really. Of course the pressure was off but it was nice to get the win.”
Cahill praised Zouma’s performance after the France international replaced Terry in the starting line-up for Chelsea’s final Champions League Group G game.
“I’ve played with Kurt a few times now and it has always gone well,” Cahill added.
“I move over to the left side which changes the picture slightly in terms of my positioning and my outlook, but it doesn’t really change anything in what I’m doing as a defender.
“It’s like anything, you play a few games there and you adapt to it. When I play with JT he’s always on the left but I’ve had a few games there now when I’ve played with Kurt and it’s been fine. I thought he played well as did the rest of the squad.”
