Jamie Carragher: Dejan Lovren has made Liverpool’s defence worse
Jamie Carragher is critical of Dejan Lovren's impact at Liverpool
Jamie Carragher says Dejan Lovren has made Liverpool’s defence worse after the Reds suffered a 3-0 defeat at Manchester United.
Lovren has struggled since completing a £20m move to Anfield from Southampton in the summer, prompting Brendan Rodgers to drop the Croatian in recent weeks.
He’s made more mistakes in league as a defender
The Liverpool manager started Lovren alongside Martin Skrtel at Old Trafford, but the pair were unable to deny Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata in the first half.
The 25-year-old played a big part in Robin van Persie’s strike as his hashed clearance fell to Mata, who teed up the Dutchman for his third strike in two games.
And Carragher criticised Lovren, who was touted as a potential long-term successor to the Reds hero when he sealed a move to Liverpool, for an inept display.
“He’s cost a lot of money but he’s actually made it worse,” Carragher said during Sky Sports’s coverage of United’s 3-0 win against Liverpool.
“He’s made more mistakes in league as a defender and he’s made a mistake for the goal.”
Liverpool remain in ninth place in the Premier League table, whilst Louis van Gaal’s United have created a three-point lead over fourth-placed West Ham United.
