Kolo Toure says he is proud of Lazar Markovic after the Liverpool winger scored his first Reds goal in a 3-1 win at Bournemouth.

The Serbia international netted in the Capital One Cup quarter-final after Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling had broken the deadlock against the Cherries on Wednesday night.

He is a great boy, works hard, is very quick and technically is very, very good

And Reds centre-half Toure was thrilled to see Markovic rewarded for all his hard work following the 20-year-old’s difficult start to life at the 18-time English champions.

Toure told Liverpool’s website: “I am very proud of Markovic.

“Since he came here, he hasn’t had a lot of chances to play but he’s shown great character and worked hard in training. He is a great boy, works hard, is very quick and technically is very, very good.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers likened Sterling, who scored twice against Bournemouth, to Arsenal talisman Alexis Sanchez.

“Raheem Sterling was brilliant,” Rodgers told BBC Sport. “I played him as a striker, but you get different types of striker.

“He’s more of an Alexis Sanchez when he plays as a striker – he’s not going to pin the defender.

“He plays in the spaces and he’s got the speed to get in behind. A couple of great finishes and I’m very pleased for him.”
