Liverpool

Simon Mignolet Didn’t look comfortable when asked to start Liverpool’s attacks from the back. In his defence, could do little to stop Frei’s effort. 6/10

Glen Johnson The right-back had the chance to tee up Lambert but over hit his cross late in the first half. Still, showed welcome adventure. Decent performance from the struggling full-back. 6

Jose Enrique Started ahead of Moreno, presumably due to his superior experience. However, the Spaniard was very poor and substituted at half-time. 3

Dejan Lovren Restored to the side in the absence of Toure. The Croatian was nervy, though. His edginess appeared to spread through a back four already low on confidence.5

Martin Škrtel His sloppy touch set Gashi free. The centre-half was slow to close down Frei for his strike. Went up front in the closing stages and came close with two efforts. 5

Lucas Leiva The Brazilian looks comfortable in the holding role, more so than Gerrard. His passing was better than most of his colleagues, although that really isn’t saying too much. 6

Steven Gerrard Struggled to produce those timely runs into the box that were synonymous with the midfielder at his peak. However, the 34-year-old’s brilliant late free-kick at least gave the Anfield crowd something to cheer. 6

Joe Allen Sloppy start as the Welshman got under the feet of Lucas. His passing was poor, too. Rodgers will face questions over his inclusion ahead of Coutinho and Lallana. Rightly so. 5

Jordan Henderson The vice-captain offered some creativity, unlike his midfield colleagues. As you’d expect from the England man, he never stopped probing, running or trying. 7

Rickie Lambert The 32-year-old was isolated up front. Didn’t get much of a sniff. Replaced at half-time. That could be the end of his Champions League career. 5

Raheem Sterling Made the wrong decision to try and find his captain rather than test Vaclik when the ball broke to him in the Basel area. Sterling wasn’t at his most effective. Denied by a fantastic Schar challenge in the final minutes. 5

Substitutes

Alberto Moreno Booked for a daft challenge. Did offer a threat down the left wing. 5

Lazar Markovic His 15-minute cameo came to an end when he naively flung his hand in the face of Safari. 3

Philippe Coutinho Why wasn’t he brought on earlier? Coutinho added much-needed invention. 6

Basel

Tomas Vaclík Didn’t have much to do in the first half, aside from a routine save. Vaclik was alert to deny Gerrard when Sterling played his captain through on goal. The Reds skipper got the better of the shot stopper with his late free-kick, though. 6

Fabian Schar Wasn’t really tested as Liverpool lacked width. However, the defender conceded the free-kick which led to Gerrard’s leveller. Great tackle to deny Sterling late on. 7

Marek Suchy Had quite an easy night as Lambert received little service. If Daniel Sturridge, or even Mario Balotelli, had been fit, Suchy may have had his hands full. 7

Behrang Safari The Basel full-back limited the impact of Sterling. Safari’s theatrics culminated in Markovic’s sending off after the Liverpool substitute flung his palm in the defender’s direction. 6

Mohamed Elneny Was on the receiving end of a late challenge from Lucas. 6

Fabian Frei Brilliant strike broke the deadlock at Anfield. Frei picked out the corner, leaving Mignolet stranded. 8

Luca Zuffi (Man of the match) Was a thorn in Liverpool’s side. Set up Frei for the opener at Anfield. Provided a constant threat as he exploited space between Liverpool’s defence and midfield. 8

Shkelzen Gashi The leading goal-scorer in the Swiss league blazed the first chance of the game wide. Had the ball in the net before half-time but Liverpool were saved by the offside flag. 7

Taulant Xhaka Sensational run saw the winger evade Moreno and cut inside, deserved more as his effort flashed narrowly wide. Solid performance. 6

Marco Streller The striker attempted an ambitious volley when he could have gone with his head or taken a touch. Big chance missed. 6

Derlis Gonzalez Didn’t have as much joy as Streller. Quiet performance. 5
