Liverpool transfers: ‘Brendan Rodgers need to find the right goalkeeper’
Rob Jones says Brendan Rodgers can't rush his decision to sign a new goalkeeper
Rob Jones has urged Liverpool to be patient in their search for a goalkeeper amid reports the Reds could make a swoop for Guillermo Ochoa in the January transfer window.
Brendan Rodgers has been linked with a move for a shot-stopper next month after the Liverpool manager dropped first-choice goalkeeper Simon Mignolet for the games against Manchester United and Bournemouth.
He will have to spend a bit of money on getting the right goalkeeper
Liverpool are reported to be interested in out-of-favour Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech, whilst Mexico international star Ochoa is another touted target after his stunning performances at last summer’s World Cup.
Former England and Liverpool full-back Jones believes Rodgers made the right decision to drop struggling Mignolet, but warned that the manager can’t afford to make a rash signing in his search for a new goalkeeper.
“He [Mignolet] has just lost his confidence,” Jones told The Sport Review.
“I remember a game where the ball came into the box for him to collect, but he just stayed on his line. The crowd got on his back. I looked at his face, he looked drained of confidence.
“Brendan has done the right thing, if you want to call it dropping him and bringing Brad in. This is Brad’s chance. He has waited long enough as the number two. This is his chance to show us how good he is.
“We need a goalkeeper as well but we don’t want to rush in and just buy any goalkeeper. We need to get the right goalkeeper. I’m sure he has a few in mind and he will have to spend a bit of money on getting the right goalkeeper.”
