Liverpool transfers: Phil Thompson welcomes Petr Cech reports
Former Reds captain Phil Thompson reckons Liverpool need to sign a goalkeeper in January
Phil Thompson says he would support Liverpool’s bid to sign Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech.
The Czech Republic international has been relegated to second choice at Stamford Bridge this season following Thibaut Courtois’s return from loan.
Petr Cech is still one of the best goalkeepers in the league
Liverpool have been linked with a move for the three-time Premier League winner as Brendan Rodgers looks to provide Simon Mignolet with more competition.
And former Reds assistant manager Thompson reckons Cech would be interested in a move to Anfield.
“If you’re putting me in the hot seat at Liverpool, I would certainly have to think of it [a move for Cech],” Thompson told Sky Sports News.
“Petr Cech is still one of the best goalkeepers in the league. He can’t be happy sitting on the bench all the time at Chelsea.”
Thompson added that Mignolet, who made a high-profile mistake as Liverpool were 3-1 winners at Leicester on Tuesday, doesn’t deserve to be dropped for Brad Jones.
“It is so difficult for the guy. He is having a hard time,” Thompson continued.
“Should he be replaced? No. Brad Jones is a good goalkeeper but he isn’t good as Simon Mignolet.
“If his confidence continues to go down, then he should be replaced.”
