Liverpool’s new signings haven’t been up to scratch, says Jamie Redknapp
Jamie Redknapp says the current Liverpool side lack spark
Jamie Redknapp says Liverpool’s summer signings haven’t been up to scratch after a poor season so far.
Brendan Rodgers left Adam Lallana, Emre Can, Alberto Moreno and Lazar Markovic on the bench before he brought on the Serbian winger in the second half of their 1-1 draw with Basel.
And former Liverpool midfielder Redknapp believes it is a worrying sign when the 41-year-old manager clearly doesn’t have much faith in his summer acquisitions to provide his side with much-needed spark.
“The new signings haven’t been up to scratch. Four of them – Lallana, Can, Moreno and Markovic – were on the bench so in the biggest game of the season, Brendan Rodgers isn’t playing his new signings which says something,” Redknapp told Sky Sports News.
“Unless Raheem Sterling or Gerrard produces something like he did tonight, you wonder where that spark is going to come from. Now the players have to step up and show they’re worthy of a place at Liverpool because as it stands, they are really, really poor.
“The players he has brought in have not played to the level they’re expected to. That performance pretty much summed up their season so far – slow starters and devoid of any ideas.”
