Louis van Gaal has restored Manchester United’s fighting spirit, according to Danny Higginbotham.

The Red Devils battled to a 2-1 victory over top-four rivals Southampton at St Mary’s on Monday night.

And former United defender Higginbotham believes Van Gaal has helped to give the Red Devils an identity again.

“One thing they have gained from last season is they can play poorly and pull out results,” Higginbotham told talkSPORT.

“There is no question that they are having the luck at the moment, but one thing that is really evident about the team at the moment is there is a fighting spirit.

“There seems to be an identity to the team, there is that work ethic, whereas last season they just didn’t seem to have that. They were so disjointed.”
