Louis van Gaal insisted that there is plenty of room for improvement from Manchester United, despite watching his side seal a 3-0 victory over Liverpool on Sunday.

Van Gaal’s men took the lead through Wayne Rooney in the 12th minute at Old Trafford, before Juan Mata headed in Ashley Young’s cross despite appearing to be offside.

Robin van Persie then wrapped up the victory by firing home in the 71st minute to secure United’s sixth win in a row and keep them in third place.

But although Van Gaal was pleased with his side’s performance, he feels that there is plenty of room for improvement.

“We are winning now – six matches in a row is fantastic – but we still have to improve our playing style,” said Van Gaal. “Only after the matches against QPR and Hull did I say we dominated the game. We can learn to kill the game more easily.

“We gave unnecessary balls away today, that’s not good. I will ask the players tomorrow why.

“I’m very happy but the next match at Aston Villa is important. We have had difficulty in away matches.”

Van Gaal also reserved special praise for man-of-the-match David De Gea, who pulled off a number of fine saves to keep Liverpool at bay.

“I’m proud we have a clean sheet but that is also because David De Gea has superb reactions,” he added.

“I think we have scored wonderful goals. We also kept the shape very good. In spite of the goals we gave a lot of chances away. That was every time we gave unnecessary passes away and that is how we have to improve.”
