Louis van Gaal admits his surprise at being named the Dutch coach of the year
Louis van Gaal has admitted his surprise after being named the Dutch coach of the year for leading the Netherlands to the World Cup semi-finals in Brazil.
The Manchester United boss was presented with the award at a gala in Amsterdam on Tuesday night after his Oranje side finished third at the summer tournament.
However, the 63-year-old Red Devils manager did not feel that he was deserving of the prize.
“I’m standing here with mixed feelings,” said Van Gaal.
“We ended in third place, while there are many Olympic champions and world champions here tonight. Maybe I’ve won this award because of the media.
“I wasn’t sure if I should turn up here tonight because footballers usually never win these kind of awards.
“But, in the end, I thought that you should always go if you are nominated and now I’m standing here as the winner.”
