Man United boss Louis van Gaal explains Paddy McNair substitution
Louis van Gaal says that Paddy McNair had 'no confidence' during Monday's win at Southampton
Louis van Gaal has revealed that he opted to bring off Paddy McNair in the first half of Manchester United’s 2-1 win at Southampton because the defender “had no confidence.”
The Northern Irishman was replaced by Ander Herrer in the 39th minute at St Mary’s after a shaky first-half display.
And Van Gaal said that he had no choice but to bring the 19-year-old off before half-time, as goals from Robin van Persie handed his side their fifth straight victory in the league.
“He had no confidence, he had given three big chances away,” Van Gaal told Sky Sports.
“It’s very disappointing for me and for Paddy, but I had to because as a manager I am responsible to win.
“Of course it’s tough but it’s also in his best interests. I have made a lot of changes and all the boys can survive. It is only one match, one moment in a lifetime.”
