Ronald Koeman has defended Robin van Persie after the Manchester United striker’s disappointing start to the season.

The 31-year-old Netherlands international has scored just four goals in 13 Premier League appearances this term.

He is a great player and is one of the best Dutch strikers we have

However, Southampton manager Koeman rates the United man as one of the best strikers in the world despite his current poor form.

“Robin is one of the best strikers. He showed that and scored a great goal against Hull,” Koeman told the Mirror.

“If you are a player at the highest level and you are not scoring or the team is not winning you know you will get criticised.

“He is a great player and is one of the best Dutch strikers we have but hopefully he will have another quiet game against Southampton.”

Van Persie has scored 42 goals in 71 Premier League games following his £24m move to United from Arsenal in 2012.
