Mauricio Pochettino has leaped to the defence of Jan Vertonghen after Tim Sherwood claimed the Tottenham centre-half can’t defend.

The former Spurs manager described the Belgium international as a “poor” defender despite the north London club coughing up £10m for his services in 2012.

Jan in his first season was maybe the best central defender in England

But Sherwood’s replacement Pochettino rubbished his predecessor’s disparaging comments, underling Vertonghen’s continued value to the White Hart Lane outfit.

“People can have their opinions but I am very happy with Jan. I am not aware of these comments. I give my opinions in private,” said Pochettino.

“I think Jan in his first season was maybe the best central defender in England. Maybe last season he was not as good, but he is still a very important player for us.”

Vertonghen has scored four goals in 59 Premier League appearances following his big-money switch to Tottenham from Eredivisie giants Ajax in 2012.
