Jose Mourinho does not expect his Chelsea team to suffer in the absence of Nemanja Matic against Newcastle on Saturday.

The defensive midfielder has been ever-present for the Blues in the Premier League this season, but will miss the trip to St James’s Park after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season during the 3-0 win against Tottenham in midweek.

And Mourinho said at his pre-game press conference at Cobham that he was happy with his options in the Serb’s absence.

“It is no problem,” said Mourinho. “Diego [Costa, who missed the Spurs game through suspension] was also important for us and he didn’t play.”

Mourinho added: “This time, Matic is a big player for us that is not playing, but we trust other people and we forget Matic.

“He has a little bit of a holiday, a free weekend, which he deserves very, very much, so he will be back stronger. Other people play, and we trust the other people, so no problem.”

Mourinho also confirmed that he expects Gary Cahill to be fit for the game, and otherwise gave his squad a clean bill of health.

Chelsea travel to Newcastle in Saturday’s early kick-off, and will look to reverse a trend that has seen them beaten on their last two trips to St James’ Park.
