Petr Cech has praised Chelsea’s response to their Newcastle defeat after the Blues were 3-1 winners against Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League.

Cesc Fabregas, Andre Schurrle and John Obi Mikel were on the score sheet for the west London side as Jose Mourinho’s men wrapped up top spot in Group G.

And Cech, who was handed a rare start ahead of Thibaut Courtois, was pleased with Chelsea’s ability to control the European clash.

“It’s always important to win especially when you lose a game in the league,” Cech told Chelsea’s website.

“We wanted to have a good performance and win the game and you could see that from the start. We were really concentrated for the match.

“Sporting did well in the second half because they needed to get something to have a hope of going through. We had to be alert and after we scored the third we were able to control the match.”

Cech added: “It’s up to everyone to keep working and to show to the manager when you get a game that you can play any game.

“For everybody it’s important to have this opportunity to play and to be in game-shape because the season is very long. You need everybody in the squad to be available and in the best condition possible to hope that you can win anything.”

Chelsea lost their first game of the season at St James’s Park on Saturday as Newcastle were 2-1 winners against the Blues.
