Steven Gerrard has taken to Instagram to pay tribute to Thierry Henry after the Arsenal legend announced his retirement from football on Tuesday.

The 37-year-old opted to hang up his playing boots to take up a punditry role at Sky Sports after leaving MLS side New York Red Bulls earlier this month.

And Gerrard underlined his respect for the former France international by posting the picture of the duo above and writing: “I would have loved to play behind this legend. World class #goalmachine.”

Gerrard has long been an admirer of Henry and once tried to lure the Arsenal legend to Liverpool before his switch to Barcelona in 2007.

“I sent him a few text messages seeing if he fancied it,” Gerrard said at the time.

“I would have loved to have seen him in a Liverpool shirt, just like the supporters would have. But he wanted to play in Spain and for Barcelona, so you had to respect that decision.

“However, he’s got a lot of respect for Liverpool. He speaks really well about us.”
