Brendan Rodgers and Steven Gerrard share a joke as Liverpool train ahead of Basel
Brendan Rodgers and Steven Gerrard shared a joke as Liverpool trained at Anfield ahead of their clash against Basel in the Champions League on Tuesday.
The 34-year-old was forced to come out on Instagram and rubbish reports of a feud with the Liverpool manager after he was dropped by the Northern Irishman.
But the pair appeared in fine form as the Liverpool manager and his captain appeared to share a joke ahead of their crunch European tie.
Second in Group B with a two-point advantage over the Reds, Basel need only draw to secure their first knockout-stage appearance since 2011/12.
The five-time European champions require three points to reach the round of 16 for the first time since 2008/09.
Liverpool suffered their heaviest European home defeat when losing 3-0 to Real Madrid on match day three and the Reds have lost four of their last six Champions League games at Anfield.
The Reds have gone four games without a win in the Champions League since defeating Ludogorets with a stoppage-time Gerrard penalty on matchday one.
The last time the Reds went five European games without a win was the 2001/02 second group stage.
Speaking at his pre-match media conference on Monday evening, Liverpool manager Rodgers urged his Reds squad to write their names into Anfield folklore.
“We would have taken this when the draw was made,” Rodgers said.
“We certainly looked at this game and the one against Ludogorets as the two that were going to be key and that’s proved to be the case.
“It will be a great night and it’s up to us to get the job done.
“This is a competition that has great history for Liverpool. It’s an opportunity for these players to write themselves into folklore by winning the game and making sure we get into the next round.
